Según cuenta la leyenda, el Cid Campeador recibió la Tizona de manos de sus yernos, los infantes de Carrión, justo antes de que se desposaran con sus hijas, doña Elvira y doña Sol.

Junto a esta espada, los infantes también le regalaron otra arma, la Colada, que fue quebrada tiempo después en combate.
